One of the questions I get from people is “How do I ask friends and family to contribute instead of bringing a gift?” Some people worry they are being rude by asking people to contribute towards one big gift as opposed to bringing multiple small gifts. In my opinion I always like to give guests the option of using Givzie and not pressure or make it mandatory. It is an optional alternative that you as the host encourage people to use, but it is not necessary. In general, I think most people like to put their money towards something that will be used, played with or experienced in some way and I think you will find most people like using Givzie for this very reason. Now, you may have a friend or relative that loves to give a special book for a milestone birthday or found the perfect sweater at their favorite local store. Embrace these gifts. These thoughtful gifts are what gift giving should be about. But often times in our hectic lives, we just run out of time and head space to keep track of it all and many times run out last minute to pick up the nearest $20 piece of plastic that a kid *might* like. This is where Givzie comes in. I suggest people to use Givzie as a tool to guide your voice and provide an avenue to more sustainable consumerism for you and those close to you. Here are some great examples of how to explain Givzie to your friends and family who might need a little nudge:
Example 1: Create excitement around the gift and about being apart of something big:
We are so excited to be celebrating Charlie’s birthday in a few week. As many of you now Charlie absolutely loves playing guitar and this year we decided to gift him the guitar he has had his eyes on. We really hope you will participate in this awesome gift as opposed to bringing an individual gift. I can’t wait to see his face when he opens his gift from all of his friends and family! Of course, if you are not able to contribute, no worries! We want you there and a gift is not required.
Example 2: Reducing Clutter:
Hi All! We are super excited to celebrate Noami’s 10th birthday at the art studio. We have sooo many toys and things from the holidays the kids are up to their eyeballs! So, please consider contributing towards Noami’s big gift of a 12 week session of painting at the art studio with her favorite instructor. She would love to receive this special gift from friends and family. If you want to see what she has been up to you can follow along on her Instagram to see her newest paintings. Thank you and looking forward to seeing you on the 12th!
Example 3: Environmental:
Hi friends and family, Simon and I are so happy to invite you to his 2nd birthday party. In lieu of smaller gifts, we wanted to give you all an opportunity to contribute towards one big gift to reduce our clutter, reduce our carbon footprint and help give Simon something really special. This year we are purchasing a family membership to the zoo which will allow us to visit all of Simon’s favorite animals all year long. The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you everyone for making this a great gift to Simon.
